Symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for Amazon distribution centre in Giengen
News 30/06/2021
The starting signal has been given for the construction of the distribution centre for Amazon in Giengen an der Brenz (in Baden-Württemberg): as part of a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, the realisation of the project, which is of great importance for the vibrant city in the district of Heidenheim, officially began now. Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH and Honold Logistik Gruppe are jointly developing a logistics property with a warehouse area of around 5,800 square metres for the world’s largest online retailer. In addition, there will be 2,000 square metres for offices and social rooms. Completion is scheduled for April next year.
The property is the first to be built in the “Giengener Industriepark A7 (GIP A7)”. The 40-hectare business park is located directly on the Autobahn 7, which connects Würzburg with Ulm and is one of the most important north-south connections in Germany. Junction 117 (Giengen) is only a few hundred meters away. The convenient location is particularly advantageous for logistics companies. Amazon will use the new building for parcel deliveries on the so-called last mile in the B2C business.
“The companies in the GIP A7 are part of our local economy and a great opportunity for Giengen”, commented Mayor Dieter Henle. “At the same time, they enjoy corresponding support from our city”. In this innovative environment, the Garbe/Honold joint venture offers further spatial possibilities for interested tenants: both partners are developing another property on the 78,000 square metre site independently of the distribution centre for Amazon. It will have a total area of 23,000 square metres plus offices, social rooms and mezzanine space. This construction phase will be carried out without fixed rental commitments. It is suitable for the settlement of companies from the commercial, logistics, production and light industrial sectors. Space of approx. 5,700 square metres or more can be rented. “There is a lot of interest”, emphasises Jan Dietrich Hempel, Managing Director of Garbe Industrial Real Estate. “The new building meets the highest standards and offers future tenants optimal usage options. Space like this is in high demand, and the location here with such excellent access is highly attractive”. The second construction phase is scheduled for completion in June 2022.
The entire property not only meets current customer requirements, but is also planned to be particularly sustainable. The majority of the roof will be planted with greenery. A photovoltaic system for the generation of regenerative energy will be installed on the remaining area. A parking garage is planned next to the Amazon distribution centre, which will provide parking for vans and cars on four levels, allowing valuable site space to be used for other purposes. In addition, the site is to be connected to the public transport system by a bus stop. For the entire property, Garbe and Honold are striving for certification according to the Gold Standard of the German Sustainable Building Council. “We want to set ecological standards with the construction”, says Managing Director Jan Dietrich Hempel.
The two project partners are investing a total of around 58 million euros in the Giengen site.
