GARBE Industrial Real Estate expands World Cargo Center in Norderstedt

Hamburg, 28 March 2019 – Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH is expanding its World Cargo Center (WCC) in Norderstedt by 5,500 square meters. To this end, another hall module will be constructed on the airfreight property’s expansion site, which is situated in close proximity to Hamburg Airport. The development is being undertaken for the existing tenant, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics Air & Sea GmbH and Co. KG, which requires more space for its air and sea freight business.
“With the new project development, we are expanding the market-leading position of our WCC in the Hamburg airfreight market,” says Jan Dietrich Hempel, managing director of Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH. The construction of the new hall is to begin in April. The completion is scheduled for December 2019. The extension is planned to be around 3,100 square meters of hall space and 2,400 square meters of office space. Jan Dietrich Hempel adds, “The relatively large proportion of office space is a result of the particular requirements of airfreight forwarding and conforms to industrial and local standards.”
In the future, the new spaces will be rented entirely by the existing tenant, the air and sea freight specialist of the international logistics service provider Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. “In order to accommodate our strategic growth in air and sea freight, we require more space at the Norderstedt location for both our operational and administrational activities. We are pleased to be able to implement the necessary space expansion together with our current landlord,” emphasizes Bart de Vries, COO Air & Sea Freight, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.
In addition to 24-hour operation, the site’s key features are its location directly at Hamburg Airport, quick access to the Port of Hamburg and direct access to the A7 and A23 highways. Transport accessibility to the highway network is a particularly important criterion, as more than half of the 75,000 tons of freight handled at Hamburg Airport in 2017 was trucked rather than flown in. Jan Dietrich Hempel adds, “The Nordport business park, where our WCC is located, is also situated in the middle of Metropolitan Hamburg and serves as an important central hub for global trade, transport and the production of high-quality goods.”
