In Germany, a person is diagnosed with blood cancer every 15 minutes. If you, a family member or friend suffer from blood cancer, the shock and helplessness at the beginning is great. Together, however, it is possible to help and increase the chances of a cure with a stem cell or bone marrow donation in the event of a disease. This is exactly the goal we have set ourselves as a company by carrying out a registration campaign for the DKMS (German Bone Marrow Donor File) on 06.04.2017.
Equipped with a large registration box, the action could start. The method of registration is very simple, a declaration of consent with information about the person must be completed and a cheek swab is taken with cotton swabs to obtain cell material. The declaration of consent and the cotton swabs will then be sent to dkMS. The tissue characteristics are analyzed and then included in a stem cell file for the worldwide search for the genetic twin. Of course, this incurs costs, 40 euros per registration. Since DKMS is a non-profit organization, it is dependent on donations in addition to the willingness of people to donate stem cells. For this reason, the costs for the more than 20 new registrations in the campaign carried out by us were also borne by GARBE Industrial Real Estate GmbH. The action was a complete success.
Janka Giese, an employee of GARBE Industrial Real Estate GmbH, has already noticed how important it can be to register. She donated bone marrow for a boy in March 2017, giving him the chance for a new life.
“Even when I was at school, I registered in a donor file. Almost 17 years later, the call came that I was eligible as a donor. After some preliminary examinations, it quickly became clear that I would donate bone marrow for my genetic twin. Garbe had a great deal of understanding and released me for the operation and the subsequent recovery time in a very uncomplicated way. For this, as well as for the encouragement and good wishes of the colleagues at this point, once again heartfelt thanks. It is an indescribably good feeling to give a person the hope of life with little effort. I would do it again anytime.”
